  • Scale up diagnostic testing and case management for malaria at the facility and community levels in both the public and private sectors
  • Strengthen the quality and expanding the availability of laboratory services for malaria and other key infectious diseases
  • Improve the capacity of clinicians and community health workers to manage malaria and other childhood illnesses

Goal:

Increase access to effective diagnostic tests and medicines to manage malaria cases as well as insecticide-treated bed nets.

Objectives:

  • Procure and distribute long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) to households.
  • Procure and distribute rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and anti-malarial drugs to health facilities.

Description:

The Sustaining Malaria Reduction Interventions in Ethiopia project assists the Government of Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and the Oromia Regional Health Bureau (ORHB) to deliver key malaria commodities to health facilities and communities, primarily in Oromia Regional State.

Goal:

Provide pharmaceutical management system strengthening support to implement malaria treatment programs at national and regional health facility levels.

Objectives:

  • Provide technical, strategic, managerial and operational support to implement and strengthen anti-malaria drug management activities in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, thereby contributing to the President's Malaria Inititive (PMI) goal of a achieving a 70 percent reduction in malaria-associated mortality by 2013.

Promoting the Quality of Medicine

Goal:

Ensure that malaria patients in Ethiopia are prescribed with good quality, safe and efficacious malaria treatment

Objectives:

  • Strengthen the capacity of the Food Medicine and Health Care Administration Control Authority (FMHACA ) and drug quality control laboratories
  • Establishing drug quality monitoring and surveillance program within the FMHACA to ensure the quality and safety of medicines in Ethiopia

Description:

The Anti-malaria Drug Quality Control program assists in monitoring the quality of anti-malaria drugs found in the public and private sector in Ethiopia. It has implemented the Promoting Quality Medicines (PQM) program to achieve the programs objectives.
