Goal:

Provide operational research support for malaria prevention and control efforts in Ethiopia.

Objectives:

  • Undertake a malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT) efficacy study.
  • Develop a malaria risk map for Oromia.
  • Molecular analysis of dried blood spots for investigation of genetic and spatial epidemiology of Plasmodium in Oromia Regional State.
  • School based surveillance of malaria – investigation of approaches for outbreak detection and response.
  • Retrospective malaria data collection from health facilities in Oromia Regional State: investigation of patient flow and access to health services.

Goal:

Assist Ethiopia in reaching certification level for polio eradication.

Project Objectives:

  • Achieve certification standards of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance at national and intermediary levels
  • Assist with the timely response to any importation of the wild polio virus
  • Continue implementing immunization campaigns to strengthen active and passive surveillance systems within the country

Goal:

Ensure that malaria patients in Ethiopia are prescribed with good quality, safe and efficacious malaria treatment

Objectives:

  • Strengthen the capacity of the Food Medicine and Health Care Administration Control Authority (FMHACA ) and drug quality control laboratories
  • Establishing drug quality monitoring and surveillance program within the FMHACA to ensure the quality and safety of medicines in Ethiopia

Description:

The Anti-malaria Drug Quality Control program assists in monitoring the quality of anti-malaria drugs found in the public and private sector in Ethiopia. It has implemented the Promoting Quality Medicines (PQM) program to achieve the programs objectives.

Malaria Laboratory Diagnosis and Monitoring (MLDM)

Date of Operation: 2010 – 2017

Primary Implementing Partner: Columbia University International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) in Ethiopia

Goal:

Provide technical, strategic, managerial and operational support to implement and strengthen malaria laboratory diagnosis activities in Ethiopia, thereby contributing to PMI’s goal of achieving a 70% reduction in malaria-associated mortality by 2013.

Objectives:

  • Ensure the availability of quality malaria laboratory diagnosis at health facilities in Ethiopia by improving blood film microscopy and utilization of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs).
